Traditional Metal Braces

Made with high quality stainless-steel, traditional braces are the most commonly used method to straighten teeth since the 18th century. The method has gone through numerous evolutions in design, flexibility and efficiency but the purpose remained the same.

Metal braces straighten teeth with the use of metal arch wires, brackets and ligatures which are more commonly known as the alastics around the brackets to hold the wire in place.

Process:

Consult – our orthodontist evaluates each patient, checking the spaces, crowding and individual specific needs to develop treatment plan unique to each patient.
Pumice – the surface of the teeth must be free of plaque, calculus, and debris so prior to placing brackets the teeth are pumiced or polished to create a smooth clean surface for the brackets to be placed on.
Brackets – metal brackets with a mesh back are placed one by one at the correct position on to each tooth with a composite bonding adhesive material that is cured with a UV light to set.
Archwire – The ideal archwire type and size is chosen to start the manipulation of arch shape and alignment of the teeth. Archwires are changed as needed according to thickness and necessity of applying consent force to move teeth into proper alignment.
Alastics – Alastics are small rubber rings made in a variety of colors. They wound around the brackets once the archwire is set in place. The alastics hold the archwire in place to ensure proper force on the teeth are consistent. Alastics are changed at every routine adjustment appointment.

With recent orthodontic innovations technology is ever changing therefore, metal braces are now much more comfortable than decades past.

Alastics are changed monthly for a duration of about 24 months or more depending on the severity. Archwires are changed sometimes every quarter according to thickness and necessity of applying more pressure.

Braces are highly efficient in straightening misaligned teeth as well as constructing functional bites which usually help with jaw pain disorders such as Temporomandibular Joint disorder and restore proper functions of the jaw.
